چکیده

Seven tone mapping methods currently available to display high dynamic range images were submitted to perceptual evaluation in order to nd the attributes most predictive of the success of a robust all-around tone mapping algorithm. The two most salient Stimulus Space dimensions underlying the perception of a set of images produced by six of the tone mappings were revealed using INdividual Di erences SCALing (INDSCAL) analysis; and an ideal preference point within the INDSCAL-derived Stimulus Space was determined for a group of 11 observers using PREFerence MAPping (PREFMAP) analysis. Interpretation of the INDSCAL results was aided by pairwise comparisons of images that led to an ordering of the images according to which were more or less natural looking.

Perceptual evaluation of tone mapping operators with real-world scenes

A number of successful tone mapping operators for contrast compression have been proposed due to the need to visualize high dynamic range (HDR) images on low dynamic range devices. They were inspired by fields as diverse as image processing, photographic practice, and modeling of the human visual systems (HVS). The variety of approaches calls for a systematic perceptual evaluation of their perf...

Evaluation of HDR tone mapping methods using essential perceptual attributes

The problem of reproducing high dynamic range images on devices with restricted dynamic range has gained a lot of interest in the computer graphics community. There exist various approaches to this issue, which span several research areas including computer graphics, image processing, color vision, physiological aspects, etc. These approaches assume a thorough knowledge of both the objective an...

Style Aware Tone Expansion for HDR Displays

The vast majority of video content existing today is in Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) format and there is a strong interest in upscaling this content for upcoming High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays. Tone expansion or inverse tone mapping converts SDR content into HDR format using Expansion Operators (EO). In this paper, we show that current EO’s do not perform as well when dealing with content of...

A Nonlocal Variational Formulation for the Improvement of Tone Mapped Images

Due to technical limitations, common display devices can only reproduce images having a low range of intensity values (dynamic range). As a consequence, the dynamic range of images encoding real world scenes, which is large, has to be compressed in order for them to be reproduced on a common display, and this technique is called tone mapping. Because there is no ground truth to compare with, ev...
